In our culture the square is a noble and egalitarian symbol. We have phrases that express the ‘square’ ethic, such as; “a square deal,” “a square meal” or “square things up.” A square is to have all sides equal. Striving for perfection and balance is the goal of good design so the square is the perfect symbol for what good design should be.

Thinking outside of the box is a fairly common request. Designers often pursue thinking outside the box yet at the same time revere the grid system of design (another set of boxes.) This personifies one of the many conundrums inherit within the design process. In the spirit of being a conformist and a non-conformist - Dare to be square.

Taylor Barnes is a designer, illustrator, teacher and the owner/creative director of L’Image Graphics, a small publishing house. Freelance and licensed illustrator for over twenty-five years, Barnes has taught seminars on the business of licensing for artists at several universities, and currently teaches graphic design and studio art to grades 7-12. She lives in Venice Beach, California, where she defiantly “dares to be square.”
